New Zealand have suffered a major setback ahead of their upcoming five-match ODI series against India, with Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra ruled out due to injuries.

An MRI scan revealed that Chapman requires at least another two weeks of rehabilitation for his left hamstring injury. He suffered the injury during his stint at the European T20 Premier League.

On the other hand, Ravindra continues to recover from a right shoulder injury sustained during a promotional shoot. With a two-match ICC World Test Championship series against India scheduled for later in November, the team management opted not to take any risks regarding his fielding comfort.

“Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side so it’s a shame they have to miss this series,” New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said.

“I caught up with Mark last week and although he’s disappointed he’s working hard to get back on the field. With Rachin, his shoulder hasn’t quite recovered to a position where he could field comfortably in white-ball cricket, so with the Test series later this month we don’t want to take any undue risks.”

In response to the double injury blow, New Zealand Cricket announced the squad reshuffle. Initially selected only for the final two games, wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert is now included for all five ODIs.

Henry Nicholls has been called up to reinforce the batting department for the first three ODIs. He enters the squad in excellent form, having just scored a century (119) for Canterbury in the Ford Trophy.

Dean Foxcroft will join the squad for the final two matches once he finishes his red-ball commitments with New Zealand A against India A. Pacer Matt Fisher has also been added to the full series itinerary as an extra bowling option.

Having picked up a muscle tear during the preceding T20I leg, fast bowler Matt Henry is joining the camp to have his fitness assessed ahead of the opening ODI in Auckland on November 4.
