India A will play Australia A in the three one-day series in Kanpur from September 30.
Iyer, who had captained India A in the first 4-day match against Australia A in Lucknow, had pulled out of the second match at the same venue, citing back issues. He wrote an email to BCCI and selectors, highlighting back spasms and issues, mentioning that he cannot stand in the field in multi-day games and wants to take a break from red-ball cricket.
“Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. Having undergone back surgery in the UK and managed his recovery well, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. He wishes to utilize this period to build endurance and body resilience and work on his fitness. In view of his decision, he was not considered for selection for the Irani Cup,” BCCI stated in a statement.
Shreyas Iyer was instead named the captain of the India A squad for the three-match one-day series against Australia A. Earlier, Rajat Patidar was to captain the first match, with Tilar Varma taking over the captaincy duties for the next two games.
Prabhsimran Singh, Riyan Parag, Ayush Badoni, Suryansh Shedge, Vipraj Nigam, Nishant Sindhu, and Gurjapneet Singh have been included in the squad for the first match. Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh will join the squad for the remaining matches.
