Rinku Singh hails from Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh.
His fortunes turned around when he was picked in the Indian Premier League by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Rinky became an overnight sensation when he hit five sixes in an IPL match against the Gujarat Titans to win KKR a match.
Since then, he has made his India T20I and ODI debut and has been continuously retained by KKR, getting a substantial pay raise. He recently got engaged to MP Priya Saroj and is currently with the Indian team in the UAE for the Asia Cup 2025.
He recently shared a horrifying story from his childhood when he was attacked by a monkey, leaving him with a severe injury. Rinku revealed that while he and his siblings were growing up in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, monkey attacks were a frequent occurrence.
But there was one really harrowing occurrence. Rinku, his brother, and a friend were on their way to the fields during the rainy season when a monkey suddenly appeared behind them. Rinku's arm was gouged out and was even one kilogram lighter than his other arm after the attack.
“The most dangerous bite he (monkey) gave me happened when it was raining. At that time, in the house, there wasn’t really a washroom, so we used to go to the fields. It was the rainy season, so I, my brother and, and my friend were going, carrying an umbrella.
As we were going, someone behind us shouted, ‘The monkey has come.’ Then it came from behind and caught me. I was completely pinned down, and it kept biting me again and again. It tore out a lot of my flesh, a lot,” Rinku Singh revealed on Raj Shamani’s podcast.
Rinku continued the story and said that the monkey wouldn’t leave him alone, even as his family tried to chase it away.
“There weren’t many people around to save me. My brother was throwing stones at it, but it wouldn’t leave me. It bit me very badly. It was during the rain, and then I ran from there. My blood was flowing like that, and my bones inside were visible.
Then we went to a clinic. When they were doing the dressing, my family was just standing there with me, not knowing what would happen, whether I would survive or not, because a lot of blood was coming out. My bones inside were visible. So, my family just carried me there,” Rinku stated.
Rinku and his family were fortunate that things didn't get worse because they were able to promptly get him proper care to make sure that he would live and let his terrible damage heal.
"Somehow, they called someone, made contact, saying, 'Come, a monkey has bitten a boy.' Then they came, did the dressing, and only after that I became fine,” explained the southpaw batter.
Fans will now be looking forward to seeing him make an impact on the field, leaving his past struggles behind.
