Dhoni is the only skipper in the world to have won all three ICC white-ball trophies.
MS Dhoni’s achievement as a cricketer is surreal, to say the least. The 44-year-old has etched his name as one of the finest captains in the history of the game.
Dhoni is the only skipper in the world to have won all three ICC white-ball trophies – 2007 World T20, 2011 Cricket World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. Under his leadership, India also achieved the No. 1 ranking in the Test format.
While Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, he continues to feature in the Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings. He has captained CSK to as many as five IPL titles.
Recently, former India cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar showered rich praise on MS Dhoni’s leadership skills, hailing him as one of the greatest because of his ability to make the players better and also win titles with an inexperienced side.
“I would rank Imran Khan from the days gone by, and after that, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, as to what he was able to do as a captain. I thought he single-handedly raised the bar for the team and got even, maybe an average team sometimes, an inexperienced team, for example, in that 2007 T20 World Cup to go and win titles," Manjrekar said on Stalin Mathias’ YouTube channel.
“And I think he was different when it came to performances on the big stage. He played the final just like he would play one of the earlier league matches. I think the moment, just that whole stay that you have for the big finals, can get to a lot of players and definitely gets to a few captains as well. MS was different in that regard," he added.
MS Dhoni was signed as an uncapped player ahead of the IPL 2025 season. He returned to the leadership role after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out midway through the tournament due to injury.
However, Dhoni failed to turn CSK’s fortunes around as the five-time champions became the first team to be knocked out of the playoffs race and finished last in the points table for the first time ever.
After CSK’s dismal show in the IPL 2025, many experts and former cricketers felt that Dhoni won’t play the cash-rich league again. However, the veteran wicketkeeper was non-committal about his possible return in 2026 after CSK’s final match of the season.
