Pakistan lost the third ODI to New Zealand by 43 runs.
Khushdil Shah, Pakistan all-rounder, lost his cool after the Mohammad Rizwan-led team was defeated in the third and final ODI against New Zealand on Saturday at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. It is unclear what caused Khushdil to charge forcefully at some of the supporters.
The supporters regularly mocked Khushdil Shah for the team's performance during their trip to New Zealand, which saw them lose 1-4 in the five-match T20I series and 0-3 in the three-match ODI series.
In the end, the 30-year-old lost control and attacked people in the crowd. The other members of the support staff rushed in and escorted Khushdil away before the situation worsened.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also published an official statement, claiming that foreign spectators used insulting language towards players. According to the statement, Khushdil took matters into his own hands after hearing anti-Pakistan shouts.
"The Pakistan cricket team management has strongly condemned the abusive language directed at national players by foreign spectators. During the match today, foreign spectators hurled inappropriate remarks at cricketers present on the field," the PCB said.
"When anti-Pakistan slogans emerged, cricketer Khushdil Shah stepped in and urged the spectators to refrain. In response, Afghan spectators escalated the situation by using further inappropriate language in Pashto. Following the Pakistani team's complaint, stadium officials intervened and ejected the two disruptive spectators," the statement added.
In the aftermath, the security dragged the fans away from Khushdil Shah, while the person shouted at the cricketer.
Pakistan suffered a 43-run loss in the third ODI to New Zealand and lost the series 3-0. The match was shortened to 42 overs each, and Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and chose to bowl first.
New Zealand posted 264/8 with captain Michael Bracewell making 59, Daryl Mitchell scoring 43, and opener Rhys Mariu making his maiden ODI fifty. For Pakistan, Akif Javed took 4/62.
In response, Babar Azam made 50, Mohammad Rizwan made 37, and Abdullah Shafique and Tayyab Tahir each made 33 runs. Pakistan could only muster 221 runs in 40 overs. Ben Sears was the pick of Kiwi bowlers with figures of 5/34, his second consecutive fifer in ODIs.
