R Ashwin retired from international cricket during the Australia tour earlier this year.
R Ashwin, a former Indian off-spinner, will have a boulevard named after him in his hometown of Chennai.
Ashwin is well-known in Indian cricket and sports circles, where he is considered a legend. But the Greater Chennai Corporation's recent action, renaming a street in the city after the former Indian off-spinner, will be the icing on the cake.
Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street in Chennai's West Mambalam may shortly be renamed after the Indian cricketer, according to the Times of India. It's also the street where Ashwin presently lives.
The official renaming ceremony will be held shortly. Ravichandran Ashwin owns Carrom Ball Event and Marketing Company Private Limited, which submitted the rebranding application to the GCC.
As per the report, during a council meeting for Budget 2025, the Greater Chennai Corporation recommended renaming Ramakrishnapuram Street to 'Ravichandran Ashwin Street' in Division 134, Kodambakkam Zone.
With this, Ashwin will join the club of sportspersons such as PR Sreejesh and Anil Kumble who have received the same honor in their respective native places.
Ashwin played 106 test matches for India and took 537 wickets. His limited-overs record is particularly strong, with 156 wickets in 116 ODIs and 72 wickets in 65 T20Is. Ashwin was also a part of the Indian squad which won the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
He will be seen in action in the IPL 2025 where he will play for his home franchise, Chennai Super Kings.
