Hafeez stirred a controversy by making a bold comment on Pakistan’s star players from 1990s.
Mohammad Rizwan's side lost against New Zealand and India, while the fixture against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was abandoned due to rain.
This dismal display led to strong reactions from the fans and former cricketers, with many calling for the complete overhaul of the team.
Amid the outrage, former captain Mohammad Hafeez stirred a controversy by making a bold comment on Pakistan’s star players from 1990s.
"I am a huge fan of those who played in the 1990s, but when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan,” Hafeez said while speaking on PTV.
Hafeez further claimed that their lack of success led to a general decline in Pakistan cricket for the years to follow.
“They didn't win an ICC event – they lost in 1996, 1999, and 2003. We reached one final and lost that badly. As stars, as players, they were the mega superstars. But then they couldn't inspire us by winning an ICC event,” he added.
Now, legendary pacer Wasim Akram has responded to Hafeez’s criticism in a savage manner, saying that he doesn’t want to give attention.
"I have lots to say about people who have been saying all this, But I don't want to give them attention,” said Akram on the Dressing Room show.
“Woh meri zindagi se nikal chuke hai, unke naam bhi nahi lena chahiye (These people have left my life, shouldn’t even utter their names)," he further stated.
Earlier, another Pakistan great Waqar Younis shared his combined stats alongside Wasim on social media with the caption, “90s ka londa”.
After the Champions Trophy debacle, Pakistan are due to tour New Zealand for five T20Is and three ODIs, starting on March 16 in Christchurch.
