Jasprit Bumrah is the only bowler to be no.1 in ICC rankings in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.
Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey lavished rich praise on India pacer Jasprit Bumrah. He lauded the Gujarat bowler for his attitude towards the game and explained why he is the best in the world in all three formats.
Bumrah made his India debut in 2016, and his Test debut came in 2018 on the tour of South Africa. Since then, he has gone on to become the premier pacer for India, and the only pacer to reach the No. 1 position in ICC rankings in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.
Bumrah led from the front in India’s amazing performance in the 2023 ICC World Cup. He was the Player of the Tournament in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win and recently took 32 wickets in the five-Test series in Australia and also captained India to a win in the first Test in Perth.
“You have to give credit to Bumrah for the way he has evolved as a player. He is so focused. He is aware of his game. He has a constant need to improve. That’s why he is number one. He’s the best in the world in all three formats. Don’t judge players by the number of games he’s played, but also on the impact he’s made in all three formats," Mhambrey was quoted as saying by MI Emirates.
“Very few bowlers in the world create that impact in all three formats. His numbers in T20s, ODIs, and Tests speak about his work ethic. He’s one of the few guys who enjoys playing Test cricket. He just doesn’t leave the ball. He has taken a liking to captaining the team as well, and I am very happy about it. He doesn’t just focus on his game; he is very inclusive. He understands his role is also about grooming and assisting others, which he has taken to very nicely. It’s not just winning games for the country. It’s about leaving an impact on everyone," he added.
When asked about how much better Bumrah can get from where he is at the moment, Mhambrey said, “I don’t think he’s a guy who looks at numbers. Just being able to win and contribute to the team’s success is what he’ll be looking at.
I just hope his body supports him here. His action saps up a lot of energy. My worry will always be the longevity of this individual. We have got to take care of him. It is easy to get away from the goal. He needs to be around for Indian cricket. I’m sure he wants to play, but we have to be smart about how to use him.”
Jasprit Bumrah is currently rehabbing after he experienced back spasms on tour of Australia, and swelling was found on his back. He has been named in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad, but it is subject to fitness.
