The BCCI has made it mandatory for players to participate in domestic cricket.
Virat Kohli’s return to domestic cricket for the first time since 2012 might be delayed as the star batter has reportedly sustained a neck sprain ahead of Delhi’s Ranji Trophy 2024-25 fixture against Saurashtra, starting on January 23.
However, the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) is yet to provide an update on the same.
“Virat Kohli has a neck sprain and even took an injection for the same. There is a possibility of him skipping the first of the two Ranji Trophy games left and a clear picture could come if the DDCA selectors get an update,” TOI quoted a source as saying.
Delhi will lock horns with Saurashtra in Rajkot from January 23-26 and they are scheduled to leave for the match on January 20.
Speaking to TOI, a senior DDCA official said Kohli's name will most likely feature in the squad with "subject to availability" next to it. The situation, however, could take a turn if they get a clear picture before the meeting at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on January 17.
Meanwhile, India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has already confirmed his availability for the game against Saurashtra and some DDCA officials are hopeful of his participation even in the last match versus Railways at home.
Notably, the BCCI has announced sweeping changes to Indian cricket team's player regulations in the aftermath of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy debacle.
India conceded the BGT 1-3 to Australia for the first time since 2014-15. Before the tour Down Under, the Rohit Sharma-led side also suffered a humiliating 0-3 whitewash at the hands of New Zealand in home conditions.
Cracking the whip against the players, the BCCI has decided to implement a stringent 10-point guidelines, including making participation in domestic tournaments mandatory to be eligible for national team selection and central contracts. It also warned of disciplinary action in case of non-compliance.
"Participation in Domestic Matches is mandatory for players to remain eligible for selection in the national team and for central contracts, as per BCCI guidelines. This policy ensures that players remain connected to the domestic cricket ecosystem, fostering talent development, maintaining match fitness, and strengthening the overall domestic structure. It also inspires emerging players by providing them opportunities to compete alongside top cricketers, ensuring continuity in talent progression," reads one of the points.
