The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring the possibility of adding a new member to the India men’s team coaching staff, Cricbuzz reported on Wednesday (January 15).

According to the report, the Indian board is specifically looking for a batting coach to address the underperformance of key players.

The report further claimed that there are few big names that are being considered, including some former domestic cricket biggies. Although there hasn't been a formal statement, team management and BCCI discussions indicate that the support crew needs to be strengthened.

The decision is being taken in the aftermath of India’s humiliating 0-3 whitewash at the hands of New Zealand on home soil, followed by the 1-3 drubbing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under.

While the bowling was fine to an extent, there was heavy criticism of the role and functioning of the coaching staff, particularly with star batters like Virat Kohli getting out in similar fashion regularly.

In addition to head coach Gautam Gambhir, India's coaching team currently features bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip.

The report also mentioned that the role of the support staff was discussed in the review meeting that took place in Mumbai on January 11. The exact nature of the meeting held cannot be determined but rumours are rife that some additional force may be hired to push the batting staff.

India’s next assignment begins next week when they face England in five T20Is and three ODIs at home. The white-ball series against England will be followed by the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan and UAE from February 19 to March 9.
