Once hailed as a prodigious talent, Sanju Samson made his India debut in 2015 at the age of 21. For the next five years, he was overlooked in the national side before he finally earned a call-up in 2020.

As of today, Samson has represented India in 16 ODIs and 37 T20Is so far. While the wicketkeeper-batter is yet to get consistent opportunities in the 50-over format, the rest to Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill opened doors for him in the shortest format last year.

Samson made most of the opportunities at the top of the order and slammed three centuries across seven T20Is against Bangladesh and South Africa.

Recently, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar heaped praise on Samson, stating that the Kerala lad got a ‘good run’ of games, which allowed him to make a mark.

"Glad to see the kind of success that he has been blessed with currently. He has been there for a long time. It's just that he has got the right opportunities and a good run of opportunities because every batter, if he is playing three or four matches in a row, that frees him a little bit," Bangar told Star Sports.

Bangar also drew Samson's comparison with Yuvraj Singh, stating that his six-hitting ability is similar to the legendary former southpaw.

"Batting up the order, he doesn't really have to worry about the situation. The field is up and he is a six-hitter. He can hit sixes with ease. After Yuvraj Singh, if there is one batter who can do it with such ease on a consistent basis, it has to be Sanju Samson. So just to see him firing on all cylinders is a treat to watch," Bangar remarked.

Sanju Samson on Saturday (January 11) was included in India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming five-T20I series against England at home, starting January 22 in Kolkata.

Rumours are rife that he will also receive a call-up in ODIs, with KL Rahul set to be rested for the England series. With Champions Trophy around the corner, Samson will be keen to put a strong show if selected in the three-match ODI series.
