Ashwin retired from international cricket with immediate effect after the end of the Gabba Test.
Ashwin's announcement came in the post-match press conference after the third Test ended in a draw at the iconic Gabba.
Skipper Rohit Sharma, who also came out to address the media, confirmed that Ashwin would not stay with the team for the remainder of the five-match series and would head back home.
As it happened, Ashwin was spotted at the Madras International Meenambakkam Airport in Chennai on Thursday morning. He made his way out of the airport amidst tight security.
Before entering his car, the great off-spinner urged the media persons for some privacy. He refrained from answering any questions, much like he had done during his retirement presser less than 24 hours ago, and thanked everyone for understanding and respecting his sentiments.
Upon reaching his residence in Chennai, Ashwin received a hero's welcome. He was greeted with traditional music, garlands, and warm hugs from his parents.
Ashwin's father was the first to embrace him, and his mother was seen wiping tears off her cheeks while hugging him.
His neighbours and close friends were also in attendance for his warm welcome as the legendary Indian cricketer entered his residence accompanied by his wife and daughters.
After wrapping up the post-match presser, Ashwin also delivered a stirring farewell speech in the Indian dressing room on Wednesday (December 18).
“I will be taking a flight back home. But I will be tuned in to watch how well you guys go in Melbourne. I will be looking forward to each one of your performances.
“The international cricketer in me might have come to an end, but the cricket nut in me will never come to an end. All the very best. If at all, you guys need anything, I am just a phone call away,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin represented India in 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, picking up 765 wickets across all formats. He finished his career as the country’s second highest wicket-taker (537 scalps) in Test cricket, only behind Anil Kumble’s record tally of 619 dismissals.
