India's five-Test tour of Australia is slated to get underway on November 22 in Perth.
Gavaskar mentioned there is so much coverage dedicated to what will happen Down Under in November, with former Australian players sharing opinions on India’s probable squad.
Not one to mince his words, the 75-year-old also pointedly said no one is looking for the opinions of former Indian players on Australian team.
“It’s not the players. The players are focused on the game. It’s the circle around which is the media and everybody else which is talking about Australia. There is so much of coverage about what is going to happen in Australia. The Australian players are all the time talking about the Indian team, what should be the team and all that. Pick him, pick that player. Nobody is asking us about the Australian team. All the former Australian players are telling us pick this guy, that guy. Ask us too who should be in the Australian team,” Gavaskar said on-air during the ongoing second Test between India and New Zealand in Pune.
Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik was also at the receiving end of Sunil Gavaskar’s wrath for bringing up the Australian series into discussion.
Gavaskar asked Karthik to focus on the task at hand i.e. India fighting hard in the second Test in Pune to save the series against the Kiwis.
“Don’t talk about Australia now. That is a mistake that a lot of people often make. You’ve got to worry about what’s happening now. Your focus should be only on what’s happening at the moment. Australia will take care of itself. When you go there, you will find the methods to beat Australia. You’ve done that over the last couple of trips there. You found a way,” he remarked.
Following the conclusion of New Zealand series, India will travel to Australia for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The marquee series is slated to get underway on November 22 in Perth and the action will then shift to Adelaide (December 6-10), where both teams will face each other in a Day-Night Test. The last three Tests are set to take place in Brisbane (December 14-18), Melbourne (December 26-30), and Sydney (January 3-7).
