In an unprecedented turn of events, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 Eliminator match between Trinibago Knight Riders and Barbados Royals was halted for nearly two hours following a floodlight tower failure on Tuesday (October 1).
The incident took place in the last over of the first innings when Nicholas Pooran was left stranded on 91* (60 balls) as TKR posted 168/3 on the board.
It caused a lengthy two-hour delay and the officials reduced the match to five overs, giving Barbados Royals a target of 60 runs to chase.
The move was criticized on social media as the cut-off time was 10:52 PM local time, but the game re-started at 11:01 PM. Had the match been called off, TKR would have made it to Qualifier 2.
Meanwhile, Royals gunned down the target in just 4.2 overs on the back of David Miller unbeaten 50 off just 17 deliveries.
After the result, the internet was flooded with furious messages for CPL organisers, and TKR all-rounder Andre Russell also joined the bandwagon.
Taking to Instagram, Russell shared an emotional note where he used abusive language and said that it was a robbery following TKR's exit from the tournament.
"Am not the person to come on the internet and voice my opinion but this year CPL I feel robbed this light situation was fuckry lights came on just before the cut off time is also fuckry and then 60 off 30 balls is also a bigger fuckry and yes Andre Russell said it right is right fuckry a fuckry but Iguess it's just pure fuckry a e gwaan," Russell posted on Instagram.
