“Duleep Trophy is about to begin,” Basit Ali asks PCB to copy India's domestic system for red-ball success

Pakistan cricket has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons lately. From constant changes in the PCB regime to dismal performances in all forms of the game, the current scenario is not ideal by any means.

During the ODI World Cup in India last year, Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinals after losing to India, Afghanistan, Australia, South Africa and England.

The Men in Green then faced a first-round exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which included a defeat against debutants USA.

As if the World Cup humiliations were not enough, Pakistan recently suffered an embarrassing 10-wicket defeat at the hands of Bangladesh in the Rawalpindi Test.

Amid the debacles, former Pakistan batter Basit Ali has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to prioritize red-ball cricket to build a more solid foundation for the national team.

Basit also asked the PCB to adopt India’s system to succeed in cricket rather than emulating models of Australia, England and New Zealand.

"There will be a One-Day tournament called the Champions Cup after the Test series. Pakistan has copied the systems of England, Australia, and New Zealand. India is right next to us; please copy their system too. You need intelligence in copying as well. Just copy what India is doing," Basit stated on his YouTube channel.

He highlighted the importance of red-ball cricket and appreciated India's Duleep Trophy - a four-day tournament designed to strengthen its players' foundations.

"The Duleep Trophy is about to begin. Is it a T20 or One-Day tournament? It’s a four-day tournament. They focused on making their base stronger, which is why they are so successful," he added.

Having lost the first Test against Bangladesh, Pakistan are in danger of losing another home series. Shan Masood and his men will look to salvage their pride in the second and final Test against Bangladesh, due to start on August 30 in Rawalpindi.
