Morne Morkel appointed as India team’s bowling coach- Report

Morne Morkel played 247 international games for South Africa and picked 544 wickets.

Morne Morkel the former South African pacer, has been appointed as the bowling coach of the Indian team. Morkel was previously the bowling coach of the Pakistan team.

Earlier, it was reported that Morkel was slated to join the Indian team from the Sri Lanka tour. But Morkel, who resides in Australia, had to fly down to South Africa to tend to his ailing father.

Morkel’s contract will start on September 1, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed to Cricbuzz. Morkel’s first assignment with the Indian cricket team’s bowling coach will be the two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home which starts on 19 September.

Morkel and head coach Gautam Gambhir previously enjoyed great cooperation with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Gambhir also accompanied Morkel to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he was the Indian Premier League (IPL) team's coach.

Morkel had a successful career with the South African national team, playing an important role in three international forms. He represented the Proteas in 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is. Morkel and spearhead Dale Steyn created an excellent speed bowling partnership.

Overall, Morkel played 247 international matches for South Africa and picked up 544 wickets in a career spanning from 2006 to 2018.
