England skipper Ben Stokes’ participation in the upcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka is in danger after he sustained a suspected hamstring injury on Sunday (Augst 11).

Playing for the Northern Superchargers against the Manchester Originals in The Hundred competition, Stokes pulled up sore while attempting a quick single and was forced to leave the field, as per the ICC.

The 33-year-old was later seen on crutches, much to the dismay of the English fans. He is set to have scans on the affected area on Monday (August 12) to ascertain the extent of the injury,

Stokes is considered doubtful for the opening Test against Sri Lanka that begins on August 21 in Manchester, according to teammate Harry Brook.

"It doesn't look great unfortunately but I think he'll be getting a scan tomorrow and see how he is," Brook told Sky Sports, as quoted by ICC.

If Stokes is ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka, it could pave the way for vice-captain Ollie Pope to lead England.

Under Stokes, the Three Lions recently recorded a 3-0 Test series win over the West Indies and moved up to sixth spot in the WTC standings. They will be keen to keep that momentum going against Sri Lanka.

During the West Indies series at home, Stokes returned to the bowling crease after injuries prevented the star all-rounder to showcase his skills with the ball in the Ashes series against Australia last year and the tour of India earlier this year.

After hosting Sri Lanka, England are slated to tour Pakistan in October for a three-match Test series.
