The meeting between the BCCI selection committee with new India head coach Gautam Gambhir for choosing the squad for the Sri Lanka tour has reportedly been postponed. The meeting was supposed to happen on July 17, 2024, but has been moved a day later on July 18.

Though the exact reason for the delay has not been revealed, the dispute over India's T20I captaincy caused the selection meeting to be postponed, according to Dainik Jagran.

One of the biggest points of discussion is who will be the next India T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format post the T20 World Cup 2024 win.

Notably, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are in a tie for the position of India's next Twenty20 international captain.

Multiple reports have stated that Suryakumar Yadav is set to pip Hardik Pandya for India T20I captain job as Rohit Sharma’s replacement. Hardik Pandya’s fitness issues and availability have reportedly played a huge role in Gambhir and selectors being swayed into Suryakumar’s direction.

As per Cricbuzz, the newly-appointed coach also gave his idea on the composition of the squads for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. He suggested the Ajit Agarkar-led panel pick players with strong commitment.

Meanwhile, the meeting is likely to take place on July 18 as BCCI secretary Jay Shah is slated to fly to Sri Lanka for the ICC annual general meeting from July 19-22.
