There are currently two selectors from the west zone in the panel and none from the north.
As of now, the committee consists of Ajit Agarkar as chief selector and Salil Ankola, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, and S Sharath as selectors.
As per the BCCI constitution, the board picks one selector from each zone (north, south, east, west, and central) with the most experienced member - in terms of Test caps - heading the panel. No selector can have more than a five-year combined term (junior and senior panels taken together).
There is speculation that the selector on his way out could be former India fast bowler Salil Ankola, since the chief selector, ex-India pacer Ajit Agarkar, too belongs to Mumbai and West Zone.
Ankola was appointed as the national selector on January 7, 2023. Before that, from December 2020, he had been the Mumbai chief selector.
As per the ad, a selector should have played a minimum of seven Tests, 30 first-class matches, 10 ODIs, and 20 first-class matches. He should have retired from the game at least five years previously. No person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee for five years shall be eligible to be a member of the Men's Selection Committee.
The Agarkar-led committee has picked the India squad for the first two of five Tests against England at home beginning January 25, with the squad for the subsequent three Tests likely to be picked after the second Test in Visakhapatnam, ending February 6.
