IND v ENG 2024: "Very proud and happy" - Kumar Sangakkara on Dhruv Jurel getting maiden call-up to Team India

India and England will play the first Test from January 25 in Hyderabad.

Sri Lanka cricket legend and current Rajasthan Royals (RR) head coach and Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, expressed delight at Dhruv Jurel’s inclusion in the Indian team for the upcoming Test series against England.

Jurel, the young wicketkeeper-batter, has earned his first call-up to the Indian cricket team for the first two Tests of the upcoming five-match series against England.

Jurel's noteworthy performances with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in his debut IPL season and domestic cricket have garnered praise and earned him his maiden call-up to the national side.

Meanwhile, Sangakkara, who closely observed Jurel's progress at the RR camp, highlighted the young star’s potential as a match-winner in the T20 format and his versatility across different formats.

As reported by Times of India, Kumar Sangakkara told reporters: “Very proud and happy because one of our key motivators and one of our key kind of performance indicators away from the IPL is producing players for India and we have produced quite a lot over the years and Dhruv being a new addition.”

Praising Jurel, the former Sri Lankan skipper said: “He's a fantastic young man, a really good player who has worked really hard to get where he has. And he fact that he's gone through our development camps and ended up in the Test side is fantastic.”

Sangakkara concluded, “He understands pressure. He came in last season in one of the most difficult positions and scored so many runs for us. He's an absolute match-winner in the short format.”
