India’s batting superstar Virat Kohli has decided to take a break from the upcoming T20I and ODI series against South Africa, hinting at a potential change in his career path.

There has been a lot of question mark on his stint with Team India across the formats, as he has not played T20I cricket since the T20 World Cup 2022. However, he has been playing ODI and Test cricket regularly. Well, the next ODI World Cup in 2027 might be a target, but Kohli will be 39 then.

However, given his fitness and dedication, Kohli could extend his career for another four years. Now, reacting to the same, South African legend AB de Villiers shared his perspective, expecting Kohli to be selective about the formats he will play in the coming years.

But De Villiers hopes Kohli will continue playing in ODIs and Tests. He also said that the upcoming South Africa series will be crucial for Virat as he starts to manage his workload.

AB de Villiers said in a conversation with Hindustan Times: “It’s very reasonable and normal for him to be tired, to feel like it’s time for him to unfold that final chapter in a way. I don’t exactly know how long he will play for but I would like it to be for as long as possible.”

He added, “The South Africa series is important to him, and he might play a few, rest and sit out a few, and find a way to manage himself leading up to the end of his career. He’s a fantastic player and long may that continue. Hopefully, that career has got a few more years in it.”
