Dravid tenure as India head coach came to an end with the conclusion of the World Cup.
While Dravid is yet to clear the air regarding his future plans as India coach, a report published in Dainik Jagran claims that the 50-year-old is in talks with IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants.
If things fall into place, Dravid might don the role of LSG mentor in the IPL 2024 season. However, a lot will depend on the discussion between him and the BCCI.
Dravid was appointed as India’s head coach in November 2021. Back then, former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had played a pivotal role in convincing him to sign a two-year contract.
During his tenure, the team reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 and the final of the World Test Championship and Cricket World Cup.
According to Dainik Jagran, the Indian board is expected to have a meeting with Dravid to know his plans but it is unlikely that he would seek an extension. He wants to spend time with his family which seems unrealistic if he re-applies for the head coach post considering the Indian team’s jam-packed scheduling right through the year.
This is where an association with an IPL franchise comes in handy as the tournament lasts only two months, allowing the support staff members to be with family and also stay connected with the game.
As per the report, LSG always wanted Dravid to be a part of their support staff but his association with Team India became a hurdle. If Dravid does not continue as India's head coach then the Lucknow-based franchise is likely to seal a deal with the legendary cricketer.
Recently, former India opener Gautam Gambhir parted ways with LSG as a team mentor. So, the position remains vacant at this time.
The Dainik Jagran report further suggests that Dravid is also in talks with Rajasthan Royals, the franchise he was associated with for a number of years as a player and mentor
As of now, Lucknow Super Giants appear to be the frontrunners to appoint Rahul Dravid as their mentor.
