England coach Brendon McCullum has defended the aggressive brand of cricket the team played and Captain Ben Stokes’ declaration in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test against Australia despite the 2-wicket loss in the end.

England seemed to be in charge throughout the entire Test, but Australia's conservative strategy ultimately won, due to a match-winning 55-run 9th wicket partnership between captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon.

In the second game of the series, England will reportedly play even more aggressively, according to McCullum.

Despite the loss, it was only England's third defeat in 14 Tests since McCullum joined forces with captain Ben Stokes in May last year.

"The way that we played, I think it validated our style. If we'd have got a little bit of the rub of the green then we might have been on the other side of it,McCullum told British media.

McCullum emphasized that not everyone has to compete in the same way by comparing the two teams' various playing philosophies. He predicted that England would become even more aggressive since Australia would maintain its cautious approach throughout the entire series.

"I'm sure they (Australia) will stick solidly to that strategy all the way through, which I think is great because we'll go a little harder. I think it makes for a entertaining next few test matches,” he added.

Following the match, Ben Stokes expressed no regrets about declaring England's first innings on 393/8 on the opening day. McCullum supported the skipper's desire to take the game to the opposition and stated that England always seeks to push the game forward.

We always want to try and take the game forward. We want to try and seize opportunities where we think we can put opposition teams under pressure. We firmly believe, the skipper and I, that this gives us our greatest chance,” McCullum said.

The second Test of the five-match series is scheduled to commence on June 28 at Lord's.
