Australia ended day 4 on 107/3 with 174 runs more needed on day 5.
Australia has lost David Warner (36), Marnus Labuschagne (13), and Steve Smith (6) with Broad taking the key wickets of Labuschagne and Smith. Usman Khawaja stood firm again to be 34 not out with nightwatchman Scott Boland on a career-best 13 not out.
Going into the final day’s play, Warner spoke about how Australia will approach the run chase and will also have one eye on the weather.
“There’s going to be a bit of weather around but we can’t control that. If it rains and rains heavily, I think it will burn off and that’s what the predictions are. You’ve got to just keep that out of your mind and play as the ball comes at you, respect each delivery, and then look to score,” Warner told SEN Cricket.
“For us, it’s about going out there and playing the way that you play. You can’t go into your shell. The positive thing is the wicket isn’t going up and down as much as you’d think from a deteriorating wicket, probably on the lower side. If we keep being patient and we keep looking to score, we’ll go a long way in this game,” he added.
Only two teams have chased more than 281 runs at Edgbaston to win a Test- 283 by South Africa against England in 2008 and England chasing down 378 against India last year.
Australia chased 282 here in 2005 and famously lost by two runs.
