India batter Shreyas Iyer, who isn’t featuring in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to a recurring back injury, is likely to remain out of action for a while.

According to a PTI report, Iyer is set to undergo surgery abroad to treat his lower back injury issue and will miss the entire IPL as well as the World Test Championship final against Australia in June.

The report claims that Shreyas might be out of action for at least five months and his participation in the 50-over World Cup at home in October-November could be touch and go.

"Yes, he will have his back surgery abroad. He is likely to be out of action for at least five months with full rehabilitation," a BCCI source PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The back injury had kept Shreyas Iyer out of India’s home ODI series against New Zealand in January and also the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Nagpur last month. Iyer played the second and third Tests of the series in Delhi and Indore respectively, scoring just 42 runs in four innings. He experience back pain in the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad and couldn’t bat in India’s innings.

Last week, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) named Nitish Rana as their captain for the IPL 2023 season in the absence of Iyer, who is their regular skipper.

“While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball cricket and the IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job,” KKR said in a statement.
