Cricket South Africa conducted the auction on September 19.
Intense bidding war was witnessed involving all six teams for a number of cricketers while some prominent names, including national team captains Temba Bavuma and Dean Elgar, went unsold.
Tristan Stubbs turned out to be the most expensive player in the SA20 auction, fetching R 9.1 million. The young batting sensation triggered a bidding war as MI Cape Town and Jo’burg Super Kings went after him. MI Cape Town went up to R 7 million, but it was the SunRisers Eastern Cape who eventually secured his services.
South Africa’s Test specialists, including skipper Elgar and Keegan Petersen, found no bidders. However, the biggest surprise was Proteas white-ball captain Temba Bavuma going unsold in the auction. All-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo didn’t manage to attract the franchises as well.
After going unsold initially, former England captain Eoin Morgan and New Zealand all-rounder Jimmy Neesham found takers in the accelerated round of the auction.
All six franchises were allowed to pick as many as five players in the pre-auction draft for the inaugural edition of the SA 20 league, slated to be held in January 2023.
Notably, all six teams are owned by the franchise owners of the Indian Premier League teams.
