St Kitts & Nevis Patriots won the last edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) by pipping St Lucia Kings in the final. Dominic Drakes stood up for the Patriots as he fired unbeaten 24-ball 48 runs to take his team home in the last-over thriller. The tournament witnessed many such exhilarating performances.
However, some players stood out from the rest. They played a major role in making CPL season nine a major success. In this piece, we look at the top batters of the tournament:
1: Roston Chase (446 Runs)
Roston Chase is mostly known for his off-spin bowling but the tall lad is equally capable of pulling off heists with his bat as well. He proved it during the last season of CPL. The all-rounder acted as the backbone of the St Lucia Kings’ batting line-up by scoring those vital runs during the middle phase of the innings.
Chase made 446 runs in 12 matches to finish as the highest run-getter of the tournament. While his average of 49.55 was doubtlessly spectacular, he made sure to keep up with the scoring rate too– ending with a strike rate of 144.
2: Evin Lewis (426 Runs)
Evin Lewis looked in an unreal touch in CPL 2021. The opening batter gave a hard run to opponents by bringing out his power game earlier on in the innings. He went out and started playing his shots in almost every game, irrespective of the conditions on offer.
The southpaw also hit most sixes in the tournament-38, ending up with 426 runs with a staggering strike rate of 163 to his name. His best knock came against Trinbago Knight Riders as he smashed an unbeaten 52-ball hundred to take St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to the semi-finals of the tournament.
3: Tim David (282 Runs)
Young Tim David unleashed his heroics in CPL last season, piling up 282 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 146. He played the role of a finisher for St Lucia in the competition as he batted around the middle and lower order.
The 26-year-old hit 19 maximums in the tournament and had the best score of 56, which came against Jamaica Tallawahs. David emerged as a match-winner by the end of CPL nine, helping him get noticed by both fans and other league franchises.
4: Faf du Plessis (277 Runs)
Faf du Plessis is a T20 legend. There is rarely any franchise-based league in the world that he is not a part of. The South African cricketer not only goes to all parts of the world to play cricket but makes his presence felt too.
In CPL 2021, he led St Lucia Kings from the front. Being captain, he stood like a rock in the middle, making 277 runs in 9 matches to help his side make it to the finals of the tournament. Faf’s run-fest included a top-notch unbeaten hundred (120*) against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, which was his first century in CPL.
5: Colin Munro (267 Runs)
Colin Munro, the New Zealand opener, is one of those utility cricketers who can adjust to any conditions. The special thing about him is that he can both go bonkers as well as play a steady inning. He adjusts his batting style as per the situation, making him a very dangerous player.
Munro had an unforgettable CPL last year. The left-handed batter scored 267 runs in 11 matches, including two not-outs. However, his strike rate of 101 looked a bit odd according to his stature. Nonetheless, he finished the tournament among the top five run-scorers and overall highest run-getter from Trinbago Knight Riders.
