'Nothing changes for Kohli': Gambhir reckons captaincy just an honour and responsibility

Virat Kohli will no longer lead the Indian cricket team in any format of the game.

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir doesn't think Virat Kohli's role will change in the team after quitting the Test captaincy.

Kohli announced his decision to step down as Test captain after the 2-1 series loss to South Africa last month, thus ending his tenure as skipper of the team in all formats.

Gambhir, speaking to Sports Today, said he is looking forward to Kohli focusing on his batting and winning matches for India.

"Nothing changes. When you are growing up as a kid you want to try and win games for the country and that is all that matters. You don't dream of captaining the side from day one so for me nothing changes. If it does then there is something seriously wrong. Captaincy is just an honour and responsibility and I'm sure Virat would be thinking the same way," quoted Gambhir.

Team India's template in white-ball cricket has come under the scanner after their recent ODI series loss against South Africa and their poor display in the T20 World Cup last year.

Sharing his two cents on the same, Gambhir said templates are overrated and he won't be insisting on one for the Lucknow Supergiants in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Notably, Gambhir has been appointed as a team mentor for the newly-formed Lucknow franchise for the IPL 2022.

"I've always thought of only one template which is to score the last run if you are chasing and take the last wicket if your defending. As simple as that, there is no other template that makes sense to me. All these are created by the media, the finisher, opener, death bowler and all.

"Cricket is a very simple game. All of us would want that when we are chasing a total, we should score the last run and if we are defending, we should take the last wicket and take the points in our kitty. That is all that matters and the only template. Templates are very overrated," he said.
