After Ravi Shastri’s coaching stint came to an end following the T20 World Cup 2021 last month, BCCI appointed the legendary Rahul Dravid as head coach of the national team for two years.

Dravid has been associated with BCCI’s system since 2015 and served the Indian team on a part-time basis in the past as well. However, it wasn’t easy to rope him as he wasn't agreeing to the job with Team India on the road for about 8-9 months in a year.

"We had Rahul in mind for a long period of time, both me and Jay, but he wasn't agreeing because of the time away from home [and] because doing a national team's job is [about being] on the road for about 8-9 months in a year and he has two young children," BCC president Sourav Ganguly told Boria Majumdar in his show “Backstage with Boria”.

Ganguly also revealed that batting great VVS Laxman was keen to work with the national team but things couldn’t work out.

According to the BCCI chief, Laxman will have the opportunity to work with Team India in future.

“He was keen on the national team job, but that couldn’t work out. But somewhere down the line, he would have that opportunity to coach the national team," Ganguly said.

VVS Laxman may not be a part of the national side as coach, but he still has a crucial role to play in the team’s success. The 47-year-old took charge of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) as the head of cricket last week and will be working at the grassroot level.

Laxman filled the position vacated Dravid, who headed the NCA from 2019 to 2021.
