BCCI top brass preparing blueprint to reduce communication gap between management and selectors- Report

The team management and selections committee have been at odds lately.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken note of the recent communication issues between national team selectors and India team management and has decided to have a talk with both the parties and come up with a solution to avoid such hassles in the future.

Times of India reported that BCCI top brass has got down to talking to players and selectors in preparation for a two-year “blueprint” to resolve such issues.

The issues reportedly began after India captain Virat Kohli commented on the need to prepare for a “transition”, particularly in the Test format, in the wake of their loss to New Zealand in the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC 2021) in Southampton.

There have been multiple instances when players have complained of a “lack of communication” from either the team management or the selection committee over the past three years. Also, there has been a common problem identified as the lack of preparing and building a team for a big tournament.

As far as communication is concerned, the board has opened a channel directly with the players and team management to avoid any confusion.

However, things became frigid once again after Shubman Gill’s injury after the WTC 2021 final. The Indian team management requested two backup openers for the England Test series, which the BCCI selection committee refused to provide citing the presence of Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, and Abhimanyu Easwaran in the squad as potential replacements.

However, after Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan suffered injuries during the warm-up match, the selection committee decided to send Suryakumar Yadav and Prithvi Shaw to England as backup players. The duo is still in quarantine and will only be available from the third Test onwards.

It has also been reported that the BCCI top brass including President Sourav Ganguly and Chief selector Chetan Sharma have been holding meetings to discuss life beyond the T20 World Cup 2021.

According to sources, the meetings were based more on preparing the blueprint. The present selection committee’s performance will be up for review after they complete a year in December.

“There were issues pertaining to communication and messages getting lost in translation. So the board top brass is looking to create a system so that the team management and players can have their concerns heard by the top management without much delay,” a top BCCI official said.
