Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to win a gold medal in track and field in the Olympics.

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Saturday (August 7) created history as he became the first Indian to win a gold medal in track and field in the Olympics. He threw a distance of 87.58m to secure the gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Chopra began his mission with a massive throw of 87.03 meters and was leading the chart after the end of first attempt. His second throw of 87.58m proved to be the deal-breaker and it was enough for him to clinch the coveted medal.

With his herculean effort, Neeraj Chopra became only the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win a gold medal in individual events at Olympics.

Neeraj’s historic moment brought joy to the Indians all around the world. Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar, who is part of the commentary panel for the ongoing England-India Test series, also erupted in joy when Chopra created history.

Gavaskar was so jubilant that he started singing and dancing to the patriotic song 'Mere Desh Ki Dharti' from the movie Upkar.

As a result of Neeraj Chopra’s win, India has now won seven medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (silver), Ravi Kumar Dahiya (silver), Bajrang Punia (Bronze), PV Sindhu (bronze), Lovlina Borgohain (bronze), and men’s hockey team ( bronze), have also secured medals.
