Kamalpreet Kaur finished sixth in the final of Discuss Throw.
The 25-year old athlete finished second in the qualifying round but never looked comfortable in the final. She had a third-round throw of 63.70 meters to finish sixth. Her position enabled her to equal the performance of 2010 Commonwealth gold medallist Krishna Punia’s performance at the 2012 London Olympics.
The legendary Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter to congratulate Kaur for her inspirational performance on the biggest stage.
"Sometimes we win, sometimes we learn. Hard luck Kamalpreet! We are proud of you for giving your best & representing India at such a big stage. This experience will only make you a stronger athlete in the future," Sachin Tendulkar tweeted.
Former India batsman Virender Sehwag was also all praise of the young athlete and tweeted that he had become her fan.
“I have become your fan KamalpeetKaur. No medal, but what a wonderful effort. Aapne discuss throw mein hazaaron logon ki ruchi Baghdadi. Medal bhi jald milega aapko.” Virender Sehwag tweeted.
A farmer’s daughter hailing from Punjab, Kaur raised hopes of an elusive athletics medal after finishing second in qualifiers. This was Kaur’s only international competition and she was without a personal coach and was visibly nervous.
