Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina is receiving flak for his 'I am Brahmin' remark while doing commentary during the opening game of the 2021 edition of Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) on Monday (July 19).

Raina, who plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, was invited to join the commentary panel, where he had mentioned his Brahmin caste in reply to being asked the reason how he blends into the Chennai culture.

“I think, I am also a Brahmin. I have been playing in Chennai since 2004. I love the culture here. I love my comrades. I have played with Anirudh Srikkanth. Subramaniam Badrinath and L Balaji are also there. I like the culture of Chennai. I am lucky to be a part of CSK," said Raina during commentary.

However, his response to the question sparked controversy, with many people criticizing him on social media platforms.

Amid the scrutiny, former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup-winner Kirti Azad has come out in support of Raina, citing that he is also a Brahmin and can't comprehend the hostile reactions over CSK batsman’s remark.

Suresh Raina was last seen in action during the first phase of IPL 2021. With 123 runs from 6 innings, the southpaw played a key role in CSK’s domination as they won 5 out of the 7 games to finish in the second position on the points table.

Raina will now be seen in action during the second leg of IPL 14, slated to be held in UAE in the September-October window.
