Dhoni has been part of the CSK franchise for 12 years, apart from the IPL 2016 and 2017.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra, who's a cricket pundit now, believes Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is going to retain their captain, MS Dhoni. However, he thinks Dhoni might not be in favor of getting retained because of the last few years in his career.
Dhoni has been part of the CSK franchise for 12 years, apart from the IPL 2016 and 2017 when he played for Rising Pune Supergiant. He led them to playoffs in 11 seasons out of 12.

"Chennai Super Kings will have MS Dhoni at the first number of course and they will do that as well. But if you ask Dhoni, he might himself say why they are retaining him because he may not be there for three years and why they want to block so much money on him. But then, that's how it is going to be. CSK and MS Dhoni are pretty much one and the same thing," Chopra said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.
Dhoni has already quit international cricket last year in August, and he played only IPL after the 2019 World Cup.
IPL 2022 is likely to see two new franchises and BCCI hasn't made any confirmation on the numbers of players that a franchise would be allowed to retain ahead of the mega auction.
"If there is a new rule that there are no retentions, CSK will say they are absolutely fine, and that they will start from scratch because they don't have players to block 15-17 crores," he said.
Chopra also mentioned that CSK should retain Ravindra Jadeja along with Dhoni, and perhaps use their RTM card for medium pacer Deepak Chahar.
