Varun has been named in Team India's squad for England T20I series.
The five-match T20I series will be played in Ahmedabad from March 12. All the players are supposed to report there this week.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Varun was set to take the flight for Ahmedabad but was asked to fly to Bangalore so that he can attend a rehab course at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
The selectors had picked him before gauging his fitness ahead of the Australia tour late last year and they did it again for the England series at home.
"He will work (at the NCA) for a while to make an effort to achieve the fitness targets," a top BCCI official, who is privy to the development, told Cricbuzz.
The report also says that Varun’s throwing arm has improved immensely and he is now able to hurl the ball from a distance of at least 45-50 metres, which he was not capable of before enrolling himself at the NCA in December.
During the fitness test conducted earlier this week, Varun Chakravarthy reportedly recorded a score well below the benchmark for the Indian players – a score of 17.1 in the Yo-yo test or covering 2 kms in 8.3 minutes.
