Sri Lanka's Upul Tharanga retires from international cricket

Upul Tharanga led Sri Lanka in 20 ODIs and 6 T20Is.

Sri Lanka batsman Upul Tharanga, on Tuesday, took to his Twitter handle and announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.

Having made his ODI debut against West Indies in August 2005, Tharanga scored 6951 runs at an average of 33.74 in the 235 matches. His tally of 6951 runs included 15 centuries and 37 half-centuries. 

The left-handed batsman also represented Sri Lanka in 31 Tests and 26 T20Is scoring 1754 and 407 runs respectively.

Addressing his retirement Upul Tharanga took to his Twitter handle and said that he believes that it's time for him to bid farewell to international cricket. 

“I have decided to retire from international cricket As the good old saying goes ‘All good things must come to an end, I believe it is time for me to bid farewell to my international cricket career after over 15 years of giving the game my all,” Upul Tharanga tweeted.

Tharanga further credited Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for showing faith in him and added that he's grateful to his teammates, friends, and his family for supporting him throughout his career. 

“I leave behind a road traveled with fond memories and great friendships. I am thankful to Sri Lanka Cricket for always having faith and the trust vested in me. I am grateful to the many cricket-loving fans, friends, and my family for standing by me during my highest of highs and even at my lowest points in my career, ” he said. 

Upul Tharanga also captained Sri Lanka in 20 ODIs and 6 T20Is.
