Malan has been drafted in as a reserve player for Australia ODIs.
England head coach Chris Silverwood on Wednesday (September 9) admitted that the new no.1 ranked T20I batsman Dawid Malan is in “phenomenal form” presently, but said it is tough for him to force his way into the all-conquering national One Day International (ODI) side.
Malan has been drafted in as a reserve player for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia starting on Friday (September 11), but Silverwood made it clear that the highly consistent, tenacious, and explosive batsman will have to wait for his chance in the One Day cricket.
With his stellar batting display against Australia at home, Malan has climbed four places to find himself at the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men's T20I Rankings for batsmen on Wednesday only after his 16 innings in the shorter format of the game.

The flamboyant left-handed batsman scored 129 runs in three innings against a strong Australian bowling attack to help England beat Aaron Finch and his team and win 2-1 series at Southampton.
The 33-year-old has now 682 runs in just 16 T20Is with eight fifty-plus scores to become a solid contender for England selection for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
Well, the English coach admitted the Yorkshireman’s “brilliant” achievements in the T20I cricket, warned him that the 50-over format is a tough team to get into ahead of the first ODI against Australia.
With Jason Roy recovered from a side strain as well as captain Eoin Morgan also returned fit after a dislocated finger in the third T20I, there are very fewer chances of Malan to play in the ODI series.

Silverwood stated: “Obviously Dawid’s form in the Twenty20s as it stands is phenomenal and it seems to keep getting better the more he bats. His record is brilliant at the moment, good on him.”
He further added, “It’s good to watch him as he’s worked hard to get into the team and when he’s got his opportunity he’s taken it, which is superb. He is in great form, but the 50-over format is a tough team to get into, as we’ve spoken about before.”
The coach signed off by saying, “If the opportunity comes around I’m sure he’ll grab it with both hands, but it may be a case of waiting for that opportunity because it is such a tough team to get into. He’s on the reserve list, so if anything happens, he’s there.”
