Johri had tendered his resignation to BCCI in December 2019.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally accepted the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rahul Johri and he has been asked to leave the office with immediate effect over mail.
Johri, who had become BCCI’s first CEO in 2016, had officially handed his resignation to BCCI secretary Jay Shah in December but the board decided to give him an interim extension till April 30.
But now on Thursday (July 9), the BCCI has finally decided to part ways with Johri, accepting the board CEO’s long-pending resignation letter sent on December 27, 2019.
A BCCI veteran told PTI on the condition of anonymity: “Rahul Johri’s resignation has been accepted. He was earlier given an extension till April 30 but this time it has been accepted.”
While another BCCI office-bearer said about the development: “His resignation was accepted today (Thursday). He had officially handed his resignation some time ago but due to Covid-19, the board didn’t take a decision as BCCI wondered how he would find a job in these times. However, the board now has released him with immediate effect.”
However, the top BCCI bosses remained tight-lipped over the reason behind Johri’s exit, but it is being said that leak over the tender with regards to team sponsorship is one of the major reasons for the current office bearers asking him to leave.
A board official told IANS: “He has been informed of the decision by email. He had resigned earlier and was asked to continue in the interim. However, the leak of confidential financial information of a bid that was being prepared accelerated the decision. Highest levels of confidentiality are expected when any bid takes place in an organization.”
He concluded, “This was considered to be scandalous and had the potential to compromise the bid. Financial matters if you cannot keep confidential, then it is a serious lapse that cannot be excused, especially with the new BCCI.”
