Australia's exciting and adventurous batsman David Warner has been a legendary figure in his 11-year long cricketing career having achieved amply of achievements and of course, many more will come his way, but at the same time, he is also one of Australia's controversial players in recent times.

The left-hander has certainly had a rollercoaster 12 months from returning from a year-long suspension due to his involvement in the sandpaper incident in Cape Town to a horror Ashes campaign last year.

However, Warner had a decent 2019 World Cup campaign but he bounced back brilliantly in the home summer to pick up the Allan Border Medal in February, and all this could not have been possible without the help of his wife Candice who played a key role in shaping his career.

Speaking with well-known commentator and analyst Harsha Bhogle for Cricbuzz, Warner has opened up about how his wife changed his approach to cricket and life in general, apart from helping him to become more disciplined to develop him into one of the world’s best batsmen.

The star cricketer admitted that all things have changed for better when his lifesaver came into his life in 2013, and then he decided to marry the former Ironwoman and the surf lifesaver in 2015.

He further said Candice, being an athlete herself, helped him look at the game with a very different perspective that involved a lot of discipline and dedication which was really helpful for him.

Warner told the respected sports presenter Harsha, “When I have been given responsibility – I’m not saying I need that to be mature – it’s what turned me around - falling in love with my wife, that was a big one. Not being rude, but I never used to listen to many people except my parents.”

The opener continued, “But when Candice came into my life, as an athlete herself, she was like, ‘Why would you drink a day before a game? Why would you contemplate staying awake after midnight, or why would you not train today?’ There was no rest for her, no alcohol.

Anything that ever hindered her sport, she was like, ‘You’re not an athlete, how can you do that?’(She was) Up at 5 o’clock in the morning to go and train. I was like, ‘We don’t play cricket at 5 am, we play cricket at 8 o’clock at night. But the beauty of it was she was teaching me discipline and I think that’s what was missing from my youth coming through the cricket system, was the discipline side of things.”

Warner, who had previously said Candice has a huge contribution to his game, said his wife's inputs really helped him a lot in many ways in becoming a better person and cricketer.

He signed off by saying, “From there I got up at 4.30 am, I trained, I did it for at least 10 weeks and it completely changed me. I saw cricket and I saw my life in a different perspective and it grew and grew and grew and I haven't looked back since.”
