Having made his international debut under Sourav Ganguly's leadership back in 2003, Gambhir also played under the likes of Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag at different junctures of his career.
"Yes MS Dhoni in records point of view, right up there but yes, for me the best captain I've played under is Anil Kumble," the cricketer-turned-politician said during Star Sports' show Cricket Connected.
"Sourav has done really well. One captain that I would have definitely wanted to captain India for a long time is Anil Kumble. I played six Test matches under him probably; he didn't captain India for that long. Had he captained India for a long time, he would have broken a lot of records," he added.
Under Kumble’s captaincy, Gambhir played half a dozen Tests and scored 610 runs at an average of 50.83 with 1 hundred and 3 half-centuries.
Anil Kumble took over the Test captaincy from Rahul Dravid in 2007. He led Team India in 14 Tests –winning three, losing six and drawing five times.
Kumble, who represented India in 132 Tests and 271 ODIs, retired from international cricket in 2008 and subsequently Dhoni was handed over the reins of the Test side.
