Hussain believes that the balance is important for the longevity of the game.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain has stressed that the quality of pitches needs to get better in a bid to save the longest format of the game from becoming extinct. He wants to see more competitive pitches where there is a strong enough battle between the bat and the ball from Day 1 itself.
He also ran a scenario of a good Test match where a team scores about 300 in the first innings and the match becomes interesting from there. These types of Test matches are important for viewers to get attracted to the longest and oldest format of the game.

Hussain said, “The keys areas I can pinpoint to one's pitches is that if they are flat, like one in Cambridge which years ago when Jimmy Anderson got 90 odd runs from 600 balls. The games on these pitches are boring and old school.”
He also added that such boring days are not ‘value for money’ for the Test match tickets in England which are not usually cheap.
“Those days have got to go in Test match cricket, 300+ score in the first innings where the ball slightly dominates back making it great for viewing and crowd experience. The match gives a value add to the tickets and England Test match tickets are not cheap,” he added.
