Ploy to play two D/N Tests against Team India could backfire on Australia, says Ian Chappell

Legendary Australian cricketer Ian Chappell, on Monday, December 9, said the idea of playing two Day-Night Tests by Cricket Australia (CA) against the Indian team on the next tour could backfire on the hosts considering the fact that visitors possess a strong bowling attack.

According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, Cricket Australia (CA) chairman Earl Eddings had recently said he will meet the new BCCI administration to push the idea of having more than one pink-ball Test against Virat Kohli and his troops during a four-match Test series 2020-21 in Australia.

However, Chappell, former Australian skipper, wasn’t impressed with Eddings’ idea, saying the ploy against the number one ranked Test side could backfire spectacularly on the hosts.

Chappell wrote in his column for ESPN Cricinfo: “Cricket Australia is contemplating two day-night Tests for the 2020-21 Indian tour. However, if that ploy is meant to advantage Australia, it may backfire as India have a strong attack and Kohli has already shown he’s adept at captaincy in this part of the world.”

He further added, “Despite doing a good job last tour and possibly overseeing an even better attack for next summer’s series, Kohli could face a different kind of challenge in Australia.”

Meanwhile, the BCCI President doesn’t seem keen on the idea. He recently said: “I have not heard anything officially from Cricket Australia. Two out of four will be a bit too much…it can’t replace traditional Test matches. We will assess it. But we can have one Pink Test every series.”

Eddings had said, “Pleasingly they've played their first day-night Test and won easily. Now they've got through that it might give them the right build-up to it over here. I've got no doubt they'll consider playing one and maybe even more day-night Test matches. But that's down the track to when we catch up with them in January.”

Noteworthy, India last month played their first-ever Day-Night Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and won the historic pink-ball game with a huge margin against Bangladesh.
