Wriddhiman Saha geared up for late December return to first-class cricket

The 34-year-old completed his rehabilitation programme following the shoulder surgery, in July.

Last featuring for India in the Cape Town Test during the extremely challenging tour of South Africa, wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha is geared up for a return to first-class cricket for Bengal, in December.

Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, Saha suffered a thumb injury that kept him out of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June.

It was later discovered that he was carrying a shoulder injury which ruled him out of consideration for tours of England and Australia. The 34-year-old completed his rehabilitation programme from the same in July.

Nevertheless, the affable cricketer could well be seen playing for his state side in the ongoing premier domestic first-class competition, Ranji Trophy.

"Actually, I had used the word 'hopefully'. Currently, I mostly stay in Bangalore and only get the opportunity to come to Kolkata during the holidays, which is hardly about two days at a time," Saha was quoted saying in an interview with Times Now.

"My fitness is improving by the day. About my expected return, it will probably be towards the end of December. But ultimately, there is the difference between 'expected return' and being match-fit. I will be sure about that only in mid or probably late December."

"They(Cricket Association of Bengal) call me to enquire about my fitness status. They also keep telling me about the matches they won, and the ones they lost," he informed.

Since then, arguably India's finest gloveman has seen Dinesh Karthik make a comeback and been dropped, Rishabh Pant emerging as a potential first-choice wicketkeeper and even Parthiv Patel make a return to the Test side for the tour down under.

"Injury is a part of any sportsman's life, be it cricket or any other game. We all have gone through major or minor scares. So, I feel there is no need to be frustrated over it,": Saha further said, "My only aim has been to recover fast and make a comeback to the game. Yes, I did miss two important series - South Africa and England - the kind of contest every cricketer waits for. However, regret is no solution. I would rather focus on what is at hand, and recover quickly and rejoin the team."

"In rehab, the system is designed to get you stronger and healthier day-by-day. You are given a different set of exercises, the patterns change. Then you do the strength-building exercises. Finally, you enter cricketing activities. That is what I am currently following. Apart from that, I am into strength work, running, etc," he signed off.
