MS Dhoni named as the highest individual tax payer in Jharkhand

Dhoni will be felicitated by the income tax department.

Indian cricketer MS Dhoni has become the highest tax payer in his state Jharkhand. The former India captain paid Rs. 57 crores as income tax for the assessment year 2017-18. 

Dhoni will be felicitated and his name was announced by the Income Tax department on Friday. Besides Dhoni, Nand Kishore Chaudhary and Uday Shankar Prasad were declared the second and third-highest individual tax payers.

Ranchi-headquartered Central Coalfields won the crown of the highest taxpaying company under the corporate category, which was followed by two Jamshedpur based companies, Timken India and Jamipol.

Big Shop, Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital and Brothers Academy (all from Ranchi) were declared the three highest taxpaying partnership firms.

Even for the financial year, 2017-18 Dhoni had been the highest taxpaying individual in Jharkhand. The Indian wicket-keeper batsman paid Rs 12.17 crore income tax last fiscal, Rs 1.24 crore higher than the 2016-17. Speaking at that time, chief commissioner of Income Tax of Jharkhand, V Mahalingam had revealed that in the the year 2016-17 Dhoni was not the highest tax payer in Jharkhand. 

“Dhoni had paid Rs 10.93 crore as income tax in 2016-17 but he was not the highest taxpayer in that fiscal,” he had said.
