Gower believes that Kohli's aptitude as a Test batsman is a good sign for Test cricket.
With the popularity of the white-ball game and unstoppable rise of T20 cricket challenging the survival of the traditional format of cricket –Test cricket, but Virat Kohli is a powerful advocate of the format and David Gower believes that his love for the format can keep alive Test cricket.
Kohli, Indian Captain, who is currently no. 1 Test batsman in the world, has always been vocal about his love for “the most beautiful format of the game” and former England cricketer Gower believes that his aptitude as a Test batsman is a good sign for Test cricket and its existence in the future.
Following India's 4-1 Test series loss to England, the dashing right-hander was quoted as saying by ICC, “I think that if you really understand the sport, if you really love the sport, you understand Test cricket and you understand how exciting it is.”
And Gower said Kohli's comment is an evidence to the fact that the longest format of the game is the ultimate format of the game even in the modern era.
In an interview with AFP, Gower, one of the leading Test batsmen of his era, said on Thursday, “We had a fantastic series against India, closer than the margin suggests. It is a reflection of the balance of power if Virat says that - you've got a lot of people who will listen.”
Gower signed off by saying, “In a few countries, yes. It all depends on the awareness of people who watch the game. If you take countries like South Africa, Australia or England, they have big crowds for Test matches because people understand the sport.”
