England's highest Test run-scorer Alastair Cook has decided to quit International cricket on Monday (3 September) after their final Test against India and suspended Australian cricketer –Steve Smith has congratulated the opener on an outstanding career

Cook, who has scored 12,254 runs and made 32 centuries in 160 Tests -  announced his decision to retire from International cricket by saying “There is nothing left in the tank” after England won the fourth Test and Test series against India in Southampton.

The 33-year-old scoring 11,627 runs as an opener is sixth in the list of all-time Test run-scorer, has struggled this year, averaging 18.62 in 16 innings and even managed to score just 109 runs with the highest score of 29 in his seven innings against India in the ongoing five-match Test series.

On 3rd September, Smith, who is currently serving a ban for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa earlier this year, took to Twitter to praise Cook.

He tweeted, “Congratulations Alistair Cook on an outstanding career. A man with a unique technique, incredible mental strength and a serious appetite for runs. Will go down as one of England’s best ever.”

Noteworthy, Smith recently represented Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Cook will play his final Test against India at the Oval from September 7.
