Former India captain and coach Ajit Wadekar has passed away at the age of 77.

Wadekar played 37 Tests and 2 ODIs for India from 1966-1974. He made his Test debut against the West Indies at the Brabourne Stadium.

Left-handed Wadekar was named captain of the team in 1971 and it proved to be a successful year for India.

He became the first Indian captain to achieve overseas wins while touring the West Indies and England in 1971. India won over five matches in the West Indies in the early 1970s, and then defeated England over three.

He retired in 1974 and was later named the manager/coach of the Indian team in the 1990s.

Wadekar scored 2,113 runs in 37 Tests with the best score of 143. He also played two ODIs and scored a fifty in the very first ODI that India played in 1971.
