Australia’s opener Travis Head has shared a post on his social media mocking South Africa captain Temba Bavuma after the visitors hammered the hosts by 214 runs in the first Test of the three-match series, which was played in Durban.

Australia had opted to bat first after winning the toss, but were reduced to 124/6. But then Matt Renshaw (190) herded the Kangaroos to a good total of 390. There were contributions from Pat Cummins (43) and Marnus Labuschagne (37), while Wiaan Mulder took four wickets and Marco Jansen took three scalps.

In response, South Africa made 284 runs with David Bedingham (49), Aiden Markram (37) and Simon Harmer (35*) being the main scorers, and Australian bowlers sharing the wickets evenly.

Matt Renshaw made 82 in the second innings, and Nic Maddinson made 48 runs as Australia declared their second innings for 314/6 and set South Africa 421 runs to win.

However, the Proteas’ chase was shouldered only by Aiden Markram (75), as David Bedingham (46) and Marco Jansen (35) tried their best and failed. South Africa was bundled out for 206 and lost the game by 214 runs. Josh Hazlewood was the star with the ball, taking 6/49.

South Africa fell to third place in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 points table after losing to Australia in the first match of the series. Temba Bavuma, the Test captain of South Africa, was trolled on Instagram Stories by Australia's Test opener Travis Head.

After the Proteas' first Test loss under his direction, Head shared a brief AI-generated video of Bavuma appearing shell-shocked.

Temba Bavuma had won 11 of his first 12 matches as South Africa's Test captain, with one ending in a draw against the West Indies. This was also his first defeat.
