India won three ICC titles during Agarkar's tenure as chief selector.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday (October 7) paid a heartfelt tribute to the outgoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Agarkar's highly successful tenure as the chairman of the senior men's selection committee came to an end on October 4 as he decided against seeking a contract extension.
“A tenure marked by some truly special moments for Indian cricket — three ICC trophies, two Asia Cup titles and back-to-back Asian Games Gold medals, along with a run to the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
“Thank you, Mr Ajit Agarkar @imAagarkar, for your commitment, conviction and contribution as Chairman of the Men’s Selection Committee. Wishing you the very best for the journey ahead,” BCCI’s social media post read.
Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the BCCI selection committee chief in 2023. His tenure brought immense white-ball success to the Indian team, including three ICC titles (2024, 2026 T20 World Cups and 2025 Champions Trophy), two Asia Cups and back-to-back gold medals in the Asian Games.
Beyond the triumphs, Agarkar's committee was defined by making ruthless and vital choices to secure the future of the team. They successfully managed the phased transition of modern-day legends like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli out of T20I and Tests, while firmly embedding next-generation talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel among others into the national setup.
Following his departure, the BCCI has officially opened applications to fill his vacant spot. In the meantime, former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha has stepped in as the acting chief selector to oversee upcoming team selections.
