Agarkar's highly successful tenure as the chief selector concluded on October 4.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir posted a heartfelt farewell message on social media for the outgoing BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Agarkar's highly successful tenure as the chairman of the senior men's selection committee officially concluded on October 4, 2026 as he decided against seeking extension.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gambhir hailed Agarkar’s conviction while also acknowledging his approach of putting the team ahead of individual considerations.
“Dear Ajit Bhai, an absolute honour to work with you. Those 3 ICC trophies are testimony of your conviction: Team first & Team ahead, always.. I must say, History will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything. My heartfelt wishes for your future endeavours,” Gambhir wrote.
Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the BCCI selection committee chief in 2023. His tenure brought immense white-ball success to the Indian team, including three ICC titles (2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and 2025 Champions Trophy) and two Asia Cups.
While limited-overs success was unprecedented, the team’s graph went down considerably in the Test format, suffering clean sweeps at the hands of New Zealand and South Africa in home series.
The Agarkar-led panel also managed a major transition phase, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from Tests and T20Is, alongside red-ball exits for Ravichandran Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane.
